Sir Joshua Reynolds: Original, Copy or Studio Painting?

Painting conservator Barry Bauman returns to the Flint Institute of Arts to present his recent discoveries concerning Boy with a Drawing in His Hand, a painting in the FIA's permanent collection attributed to Sir Joshua Reynolds. Attributions to Reynolds are complicated by the fact that he routinely painted only the hands and faces on many of his portraits, while assistants filled in the background, the clothes, and the details. Copies of Reynolds' paintings originating from his studio and those by other artists during and after his lifetime further complicate matters. Is Boy with a Drawing in His Hand an original work, a copy, or a studio painting' In this illustrated lecture, Mr. Bauman will discuss how he used art historical research, examination techniques, treatment findings, X-rays, and inductive reasoning to discover the painting's true origins.
