Carlota Duarte, an artist and member of the Society of the Sacred Heart, founded the Chiapas Photography Project in 1992 to give the Maya people of Chiapas, Mexico, "the opportunity to represent themselves with their own artistic talent and to regard themselves and their cultural heritage with dignity and pride." In this illustrated lecture Sister Duarte discusses the origins and activities of the project. Carlota Duarte earned her MFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design. A nun in the Society of the Sacred Heart, she founded the Chiapas Photography Project in 1992 and has since instructed hundreds of indigenous Maya men and women in the use of photography as a way to give voice to their own history and culture. Sister Duarte has also coordinated the publication of several books of photographs documenting Maya culture and society. She currently resides in the historic town of San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico.
