Flint-bred and California-based media ecologist Gerry Fialka will present a free, interactive lecture, "The Machine as Art: From Archetype to Cliché,” at 2 p.m. March 20 at the Flint Institute of Arts. In the latest of his series of yearly presentations at the FIA, Fialka will probe society’s interrelations with technology, art, music and literature. By flipping Marshall McLuhan’s book “From Cliché to Archetype,” Fialka promises to shed new light on artists such as Alexander Calder and Man Ray, as well as video games and robotics. Fialka is appearing in connection with the FIA’s exhibition of his new 14-minute video, “Eye Am Not a Robot." The video investigates the concept of technology “being alive.”
