In today’s world where digital devices are becoming common, available at low cost, and used for not only talking, but for e-mail, reading books, video, chat and text messages, one might wonder about the future of the book, and indeed the written word. In Ray Bradbury’s dystopic novel, "Fahrenheit 451", he presents a world where the written word is forbidden and a fireman’s job includes burning books which have been outlawed by the government. How close is his depiction in comparison to the world today; and what role do libraries play in sustaining an informed, literate society?

“Guy Montag was a fireman whose job it was to start fires... The system was simple. Everyone understood it. Books were for burning ... along with the houses in which they were hidden.”

American Place Theatre presents "Fahrenheit 451" at the Whiting and educational workshops in several community high schools in a week long literary residency! The teaching artist will give a short dramatic presentation before the library’s panel discussion.

Multiple copies of the book will be available for checkout at the Browsing Desk on the second floor.
