    WHY CELEBRATE


    Purpose


    Flint’s Juneteenth Celebration is designed to provide Flint area residents with activities and events that share and celebrate African Americans Day of Independence. The celebration's primary focus is to build bridges of understanding and promote goodwill and strong communities.


    History


    “Juneteenth” acknowledges the abolishment of slavery and recognizes the Emancipation Proclamation. Historically, Texas was the first state to celebrate “Juneteenth” or Freedom Day. Today “Juneteenth” is celebrated in many U.S. cities by an increasing number of American citizens and was recently (2005) made a state holiday in Michigan.


    “Juneteenth” is known to be the oldest African American Celebration in the United States and is recognized as a state holiday in several states. Most recently the state of Connecticut.


    Description and Events


    Flint’s 2011 Juneteenth Celebration is planned for four BIG days, June 16th through the 19th. Activities include The Coalition for Positive Youth Developments Youth Recognition Dinner, Flints Largest Parades, Salem Housings Juneteenth Fun Day, Dodge Ball. Outdoor concerts, The Juneteenth Gospel Concert, Poets, Storytellers and a Kool Aid Make-N contest plus more.
