    Acknowledged as being one of the most influential African American quilt historians in the United States, Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi of West Chester, Ohio will speak on “The Daughters of Harriet Powers: African American Women Quilt a Culture.” Harriet Powers was a slave women born in 1837 whose biblical quilts are exhibited in some of the nation’s premier museums including the Smithsonian. Dr. Mazloomi is the author of “Journey of Hope: Quilts Inspired by President Barack Obama,” “Textural Rhythms: Quilting the Jazz Traditional,” “Spirits of the Cloth: Contemporary African American Quilts,” “Threads of Faith: Recent Works from the Women of Color Quilters Network.” and more. This program is in conjunction with the Greater Flint Arts Council's Flint Festival of Quilts and The Flint African American Quilters' Guild Exhibit.
