"With Babies & Banners" is a 1977 Academy Award nominated documentary about the role women played during The Great Flint Sit Down Strike of 1936-37. Introducing viewers to Genora Johnson Dollinger, a Flint-born woman who organized and led the Women’s Emergency Brigade – a militant, red armband and red beret wearing pro-union support group. The brigade acted as a self-appointed auxiliary army to the UAW which battled police, General Motors, strike opponents and anyone who stood in their way. "With Babies and Banners" tells the story of the Women's Emergency Brigade, composed of female GM workers and the wives of men involved in the sit-down strike, which not only provided support services (like running the union kitchens that provided food to the strikers occupying the plants) but did picket duty themselves. It intercuts footage from 1937 with interviews with the same women 40 years later, still active in union politics and still pressuring the UAW to acknowledge women as equals. (1977; run time 45 minutes). A reception precedes the movie at 5:30 pm. This movie is shown in conjunction with the "Red Beret Quilt Exhibit" on display at the Library through December 30.
