The Flint African American Quilters Guild presents its annual quilting exhibit at the Flint Public Library, 1026 E. Kearsley St., Flint, September13-15, 2012 in coordination with the Flint Festival of Quilts. Master quilter Yvonne Wells of Tuscaloosa (Al) will share stories about her award-winning picture quilts on September 15.

According to Nanette Chisholm, President of the Flint African American Quilters Guild the theme is “Back to Basics” She said “We want people to know how easy it is to quilt and to encourage them to learn to quilt.” The Flint African American Quilters Guild teaches free classes Tuesdays, 2-4pm at the Sylvester Broome Center, 4119 N. Saginaw.

This year’s show will feature over 50 quilted items. The exhibit can be viewed during library hours; 9am to 8pm, Thursday and Friday September 13 and 14, and 9am to 6pm, Saturday, September 15.

Master quilter, Yvonne Wells will talk about her picture quilting technique at 2pm on Saturday, September 15. Wells is a retired teacher who is completely self-taught as a quilt maker and artist. She is best known for her pictorial quilts, created in sizes to be hung on a wall, that express narratives of personal, religious and political significance. Her quilts depict events such as biblical and Civil Rights themes. In 1993 she created a quilt square and heart representing the State of Alabama for the White House Christmas Tree under President Clinton. Several of her quilts have been used as images on greeting cards by the Hallmark Card Company.

Yvonne Wells says of her work, “Oh, art is a way of expression. It is a way of getting the inner feeling out so that others can see it. It is a fulfilling event. It is like a baptism. It is all those things in one. It’s not what you learn in the halls and walls of the schools, but it is that which is learned out there in this vast world, and it’s also satisfying. It’s that inner peace or that inner thing that’s talking to you that you hear and others don’t hear. But when you make the quilt or make the piece of artwork, this is what the inside of you is saying, and you just bring it out and people can see the way you feel or the way you are hearing things.”

In addition to the Flint Public Library and the African American Quilters Guild, the program with Yvonne Wells is co-sponsored with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Flint Alumnae Chapter.

Each year the guild creates a quilt to be raffled off. This year’s quilt, made by Nanette Chisholm, is called “Squarely New York.” Proceeds from the raffle help with securing guest speakers and the free quilting classes at the Broome Center.

Currently there are 15 members of the Flint African American Quilters Guild. The Guild was founded in 1989 by Jeffalone Rumph and Derenda Collins. This is the 24th anniversary the guild’s founding. This is their 23rd exhibit. Their first exhibit was held in 1990. This is their 18th exhibit at the Flint Public Library. Their first five exhibits were held at Charity United Methodist Church.
