26th Annual Exhibit of the Flint African American Quilters Guild “Be Colorful”
Celebrating 26 years the Flint African American Quilters Guild will showcase their history of the quilting arts in the library. General Reading.

Valerie C. White is an award willing fiber artist and educator who will present a lecture as the keynote speaker and exhibit her mastery as a quilt artist. Co-sponsored by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Flint Alumnae Chapter

Ms. Valerie C. White has been creating award-winning quilts for almost twenty years. She is a retired Art educator from the District of Columbia Public Schools in Washington, DC, and she continues to share her passion for textiles, teaching and presenting lectures nationally. This lecture is co-sponsored with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Flint Alumnae Chapter.

2) Hoffman’s Deco Deli

Featuring: Quilts from the Deaf Community

The Flint area probably has the highest number of Deaf Quilters per capita than anywhere else in the world.  We have three (3) active Deaf Quilt Clubs: Flint Deaf Quilters; Deaf Quilters United, and Patchwork Deaf Quilters.  For this show, we selected quilts with Deaf related themes.  Artwork that showcase the Deaf Experience with affirmative, liberation and/or resistance themes are called D’VIA ARt.  De’Via stands for Deaf View Image Art.  The French sounding name is a homage to the French roots of ASL and Deaf Education here in America.

3) First Presbyterian Church

Featuring: 2015 Sacred Threads Exhibit

Fourty (40) quilts conveying a “respectful venue for quilters of all faiths whose work expresses a connection to the sacred, their spiritual journey or a deeply felt response to life.”  These quilts are “powerful stories-in-fabric from quilt artists throughout the USA and Canada offering an inspiring source of encouragement, healing, strength and connections.  The quilts selected represent one or more of six (6) components:  joy, inspiration, spirituality, healing, grief, and also peace and brotherhood.  For information call: (810) 234-8673

4) Greater Flint Arts Council (GFAC)

816 S. Saginaw Street, Flint

Admission:  Free

Featuring:  Brothas Doing Our Thing

This is a juried quilting exhibition of artwork created by male quilters.  This exhibit is coordinated by artist Roy Mitchell, Jr. “Watermelunman” and he will be hosting a quilting workshop at the Flint Public Library.  The workshop will cover couching techniques from beginning to end, as well as using different strings of floss, and how to assemble the watermelunman babies pattern.  This exhibit will be present at GFAC from Sept. 10th through October 2, 2015.
