Thompson Lecture – Beyond the Horizon: A History of Blue

    FIA Theater
    FIA members-only event

    Guest Lecturer
    Dr. James Fox

Forty percent of the world's population name blue as their favorite color. Blue also has a unique affect on us. Research has proven it can stimulate creativity and calm our psyche. This year's Thompson speaker, Dr. James Fox, will tell us why that is as he examines the vast and fascinating history of the color blue and its impact on the art world—ranging from Afghanistan to India, the discovery of lapis lazuli, to the great Renaissance painters, to Cezanne and Picasso's use of blue through to the dark side of the moon.

James Fox earned his degrees from the University of Cambridge and currently serves as a Research Fellow at Gonville & Caius College and specializes in 20th-century art at the University of Cambridge's History of Art Department. He has appeared on numerous radio and television programs, and writes and presents art documentaries for the BBC.

The Thompson Lecture was established in 1991 by Dr. and Mrs. Jack W. Thompson to enable the Flint Institute of Arts to present a distinguished speaker in the arts or humanities each year. The Thompson Lecture is one of the Institute's few members-only events and was established, in part, to attract new members to the FIA.
