The AIDS Memorial Quilt: YESTERDAY and TODAY

Memorial – Tool for Education – Work of Art

Presented by Rosemary Spatafora, Panelmaker & Quilter

Almost 30 years after the first panel was made, the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt remains one of the world’s largest community arts projects.  The Quilt has redefined the tradition of quilt-making in response to contemporary circumstances.  A memorial, a tool for education and a work of art, the Quilt is a unique creation, an uncommon and uplifting response to the tragic loss of human life.

Rosemary Spatafora has quilted since 1989.  In 1992 she created a panel for the AIDS Memorial Quilt to memorialize her brother, Tom Knobblock, who died in 1991.  After that first panel Rosemary made five more panels to commemorate the lives of friends that she met through her work with The NAMES Project Metro Detroit Chapter.  She chaired the Education and Outreach committee for the Metro Detroit Chapter and served on the steering committee for two major displays of The Quilt at Cobo Center in Detroit.  She also took portions of The Quilt into numerous schools for HIV/AIDS Awareness and Education programs.

For all ages

Stop by one of the nearby eateries and grab lunch and head on over…keep in mind please nothing sticky or icky that could hurt the quilt…thanks!
