First Friday: Moon Sighting

First Friday: Moon Sighting

Presented by Sloan*Longway at Longway Planetarium

Discover connections between astronomy and Islamic history and culture while exploring moonsighting—the practice of observing the moon to determine the arrival of the new month in the Islamic lunar calendar. As the month of Ramadan approaches, Muslims around the world will sight the moon to greet this special season. Learn about the science and history of moonsighting with a lecture in the dome, then practice sighting the moon outside with telescopes. Bring the whole family and enjoy hands-on activities for children in the Longway classrooms.
