My husband and I have gone several years and always enjoy the mini shows, food, vendors. Each year we try going different weekends to take in the different themes. Plenty of things for families with children. Some years we dress up also to blend in with the time era. Incredible just to watch all the workers and people that attend this event. Plan on spending whole day to take in everything offered at this festival. Collapse

This event is the biggest disgrace to Native American culture I have ever seen. As a native traditional dancer, I am among the many who boycott this event. It's put on by a bunch of white people that don't know the first thing about a Saama offering! And don't get me started on the gourd dance - (Watching paint dry is more entertaining!) Dancers are charged to dance, the giveaway is only for those in the private club, and they don't follow local traditions in the least. Save your hard earned money for better powwows like the black river powwow in wadhams or the oscoda powwow! Collapse

If you are a fan of gospel music and song, then hightail it to the New McCree Theare and get a load of their current show. It's an incredible 2 hours of song and story revolving around the rise of an obscure group of bakup singers to chart-topping stardom. All of the music is original. Infact, gospel music virtuoso Lannie Spann McBride,of Jackson MS,composed & arranged the score expressly for this production.Charles Winfrey wrote script & added a few songs. The story of 3 singers who decide to go it alone when the lead singer,Johnnie Gospel, strays from his calling and fires them. The Gospelettes venture out &fall apart. They revamp after years of disarray leading to 2 groups of Gospelettes plus one. More mayhem insues with a court case and more music & mishaps. A fine balance of musicians, led by Phillip Young,& vocals. Set changes r handled smoothly by a crew of chorus members with attention paid to fine details by director,Cathy Johnson. Symbolism is hard to miss.787.2200 4 tics. 12/16-18 Collapse

I attended the Artist Reception on Sept 12. In addition to the fine craftsmanship of the works themselves, I appreciated her artist notations that accompanied each work - pulling the viewer more deeply into her own inner processes that created these works. What at first may look like a disparate collection becomes more of a unified artistic and personal vision. Collapse

--If you like adult dramatic theatre, you would enjoy the play “Forest for the Trees” that opened tonight 9/23/10 at the Good Beans Cafe on N. Grand Traverse. See www.flintcitytheatre.com. --Like the web page says; mature content, nudity, puppets (story telling hand puppets for scene transitions). It is all three. Do not take the kids. --I found this play very well written and very well acted (both by young Flint residents). I could relate to many of the relationship jokes and scenes, if not the underlying premise (no spoiler alert here). The twists and turns just keep coming. --They ask $8 per head, but pay what you can. It lasts 1 hour 5 minutes. If you like to support local theatre, not just Frankenmuth, give it a try. Then have dinner at The Blackstone (good beer selection). I am becoming a regular at 501 across the street from The Blackstone (501 has a good wine by the glass selection). Collapse

What a connecting point to listen to stories come to life from the vocal gymnastics of the tellers. How the worlds they tell about come to life. Watching and listening to them as they massage the inner cortexes for the journey. Waiting for this years Storytelling Festival to spring to life. Appreciating the many years that the FPL has made this possible for myself and my children. We have appreciated this option to television and the movies especially with the many tellers in our community that have presented one time or another for my children's birthdays, graduations and our life stories at our family reunions. What a gift to anyone you can give which has lasting effects and memories. Keep up the good work FPL and please continue the living spoken word art which comes with each of the tellers you have had over the years. What a blessing for the FPL-Flint to have such a wonderful event for the community. Enriching childrens lives through the art of reading. Thank You so much. FREE 2 C Collapse

Flint-Genesee CVB's Pick of the Week...
- The Flint-Genesee County Convention & Visitors Bureau suggests the following discount package...
- Michigan Automotive History Starts in Flint:
Thousands visit Michigan yearly to get a glimpse of its mesmerizing Great Lakes. We'll give you another reason - automotive history. Since the early 1900s, the automotive industry has touched millions of families that call Michigan home. We invite you, and your families, to step back in time and discover these incredible automotive stories. At the Sloan Museum and Buick Gallery, witness the birth of General Motors, the UAW and the manufacturing industry that made Flint a leading industrial center. Then travel 30 minutes south of Flint, to Auburn Hills, and enjoy the "ride" at the Walter P. Chrysler Museum where more than 65 antique, custom and concept vehicles celebrate the proud American heritage of an automotive original. Then, somewhere between the fun, tour one of Flint's oldest Victorian Era homes, the Whaley Historical House Museum (optional tickets available).
Discounted, overnight packages are available starting as low as $75 per night, for a family of four, and includes admission to the Sloan/Buick Gallery, the Chrysler Museum and overnight accommodations at a Flint/Genesee County area hotel of your choice. For more information, visit "Overnight Pure FunPaks" or call the Flint-Genesee County Convention & Visitors Bureau at (810) 232-3261 or toll free at 1-877-FLINT-MI.
