When Jon Coggins says "Mutant Pop Culture," the Buckham Alley Theatre production that opened Thursday (May 8) at Woodside Church, began as a search for his childhood, we must assume his youthful humor was generally quirky but less than clever. No one is safe from the satire, and plenty of well-known folks come under the "Mutant" microscope. But there also is a whole lot of potty and flatulence humor that undermines the high comedy upon which satire should be built. Co-anchoring the show is J.R. Nunley as a host of characters, most of them outrageous women. First, Coggins and Nunley begin as newscasters commenting on the passing scene. This setup recurs throughout, but most of the lines are read from a script. Unfortunately, neither fellow is very good at reading, so much of the comedy gets lost in the speed of the delivery. Also performing in this improvisation-based script are Aaron Kolb, William McMillan, Rebecca Coggins, Chris Wright and Levi Petrone. Collapse

This show had the best singing in Flint since LaKisha Jones was on American Idol! The New McCree Theater troupe brought a vibrant vocal dimension to the FCP, who are always good, but they can't sing like this bunch. I hope they will join arms again in the future. At the first evening's production the sound amplification system was somewhat week, but that may have improved later. But still the best gig in town! Collapse

Dreamgirls Bianca Tedford, Chaika Stribling and Sharondra Smith rehearse at Bower Theater on April 28 Audiences certainly can get their money's worth in non-stop entertainment this month as Flint Community Players and The New McCree Theatre combine to present the amazing Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger musical "Dreamgirls." It is three hours of unflagging energy and stunning musical expertise. Ostensibly the story of the rise of The Supremes during the turbulent 1960s and '70s, the story traces the steps to fame followed by three Chicago girls as they try to break into the music business in New York. It isn't just about the music though. The story also offers glimpses of the behind-the-scenes reality of the entertainment industry. This business side was illustrated best Friday in the show-stopping "Steppin' To The Bad Side." Directed and choreographed by Steven J.Mokofsky and co-produced by Charles H. Winfrey and Mokofsky, Collapse

According to the Flint Journal's theatre critic in referring to The Frankie Lymon Story, "this one tops them all." She continues: "For baby boomers, this show is an exciting nostalgic return to the beginnings of rock n' roll. Wonderful tunes such as "Goody, Goody," "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," and "Little Bitty Pretty One" are just a smattering of the show's ballads and doo-wop music." Collapse

I'm happy to know that finally someone is thinking of doing something special on that day. May I suggest to make it even more special for the child/children that will be there and who are born on that very special day... lots of these children are told each year that they don't have a birthday and as a child it can be hurtful as they don't always understand... I know this as I've been there too (I am a leap day baby). My best to all and Happy Birthday to those born on Feb. 29! :) Collapse

Queen Mad was true to her character's allure. Enchanting, dangerous and effortless in movement. Juliet was the picture of innocence and young love. Overall, the choreography was amazing. This version is filled with symbols and imagery in hopes of bring the full scope of Shakespeare's tragic tale to life. The problem is that, one got lost in the imagery. It was more like a labyrinth than a love story. Reading the program did not help. Over all, it was a great performance. Just bring a cliff note along. Collapse
