9th Annual Community Gala

Presented by Flint Institute of Arts at Flint Institute of Arts

The Flint Institute of Arts will celebrate the opening of the exhibition From Heart to Hand with the ninth annual Community Gala. The Gala will feature a conversation between artist Yvonne Wells and Stephanie James, Mott-Warsh Curator and Collection Educator. Following the discussion, view the new exhibition, enjoy a reception with live music, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

Yvonne Wells earned a bachelor’s degree from Stillman College in 1964 and a master’s degree from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. She taught high school in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for 35 years and remained a substitute teacher for another 10 years. She began making quilts in 1979, with designs that were mostly abstract. It was not until 1983 that her quilts started to depict scenes from the Bible, Civil Rights Movement, and other events in Alabama’s history. Her quilts often deal with themes of emotion and human relationships.

Stephanie James is a curator of modern and contemporary art with a focus on art of the African Diaspora. She is the Curator and Collection Educator for the Mott-Warsh Collection—a Flint-based private collection of over 600 works of art created primarily by artists of African heritage. Prior to her current position, she worked at the Detroit Institute of Arts for nearly 16 years, serving as assistant curator of the General Motors Center for African American Art and in various appointments in the museum’s education department.
