Sheppy Dog Fund Lecture: Between Magic & Monotheism: Judaism & Sorcery in the Ancient World

Presented by Flint Institute of Arts at Flint Institute of Arts

Guest Lecturer
Dr. Justin Sledge

The Bible is unequivocal: the practice of magic is utterly forbidden. Yet, the archaeological and literary records reveal that magic, in many forms, thrived in virtually all layers of ancient monotheistic society. This lecture will discuss how ancient Judaism and Christianity hovered between a developing monotheism and other, sometimes even malevolent, supernatural forces.

Dr. Justin Sledge was born in Jackson, Mississippi. He received a MA in Mysticism and Esoteric Philosophy from the University of Amsterdam and received his MA and PhD in Philosophy from the University of Memphis. He has written on the intersection of metaphysics and politics often focusing on “non-canon” figures in the western intellectual tradition. Dr. Sledge currently teaches philosophy and religious studies at Wayne State University.
