Early Literacy Workshop for Parents and Caregivers

Early Literacy Workshop for Parents and Caregivers

Presented by Flint Public Library at Flint Public Library

The Flint Public Library along with the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network and partners will present a workshop for parents and caregivers designed to help prepare Every Child Ready to Read®. This workshop is free and will be held on Saturday, April 16, 1-4pm at the Flint Public Library. To register call the Library’s Children’s Learning Place, 810.249-2170.

Research shows that children who develop essential language and other early literacy skills before they start kindergarten become better readers. Children who do not know these skills when they begin school have a more difficult time learning to read.

“Whether a child is four days old or four years old, it is not too early, or too late to help him or her develop important literacy and pre-reading skills,” said Leslie Acevedo, Director of Library Operations, at the Flint Public Library.

Parents and other caregivers will learn how to develop important skills through the library’s Every Child Ready to Read® workshops, which include:

·   Demonstrate how to help children learn early literacy skills.

·   Engage adults in fun activities that use simple but powerful learning experiences.

·   Send parents and caregivers home with early literacy activities to incorporate into everyday routines.

Public libraries are centers for early childhood literacy and the Flint Public Library encourages everyone to “Learn for Life.” In addition to the Every Child Ready to Read® workshop, the Library has books, programs, and other resources to help parents understand how to prepare children to become fluent readers and eager learners.

The ECRR Parent and Caregivers’ Workshop is a collaboration
between the Flint Public Library, the Flint & Genesee Literacy
Network, the Flint Institute of Arts, the Genesee Intermediate
School District, Genesee District Library and the University of
Michigan-Flint, School of Education.
