Kids Kan Kwilt (Grades 3-8)

Presented by Flint Public Library and Greater Flint Arts Council at Flint Public Library

Kidz Kan Kwilt! The Greater Flint Arts Council in coordination with the Flint Festival of Quilts will present a FREE Children’s Quilt Workshop for youth in grades 3rd-8th at the Flint Public Library with artist and award winning quilter Marty Calhoun, September 10, 1:30-4:30pm. RSVP to Greater Flint Arts Council 810.238-2787 by 5pm September 6. Limit 16.

Participants will create a small felt quilt perfect to cover a doll, teddy bear, or tabletop as well as hanging on the wall. Learn to hand stitch and embellish with threads, ribbons, and buttons. Patterns and stencils will be available as well as paper to draw your own patterns.

Ms. Marty Lawrence Calhoun creates traditional and original art quilts using recycled material, store-bought fabrics, as well as her own hand-dyed and marbled cloth sold through her business Kwilts & Kloze.  She won the 1997 Flint Festival of Quilts Best Miniature award. She holds B.S. Vocational Ed and Special Ed degrees and presently is a sewer and teaches sewing at St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center.

Adults looking for something to do while youth are in the quilt workshop can view the African American Quilters Guild Exhibit and hear guest lecturer and master story quilter Phyllis Stephens of Atlanta talk about her craft at 2pm on Saturday, September 10.
