12:30-2pm American Fiddle Styles– Award-winning fiddlers Aaron Jonah Lewis and Lindsay McCaw, of the Corn Potato String Band, will discuss and demonstrate a variety of old time (i.e. pre-bluegrass) fiddle styles from different regions of the US including, Appalachian breakdowns, Midwestern polkas, country rags, fiddle blues from Tennessee, and Texas contest fiddling. Lewis and McCaw will include twin fiddling and possible discussion and demonstration of twin fiddling styles and techniques if time allows. If there is enough interest they will teach a tune from their repertoire as well. This workshop will last 60-90 minutes.
2:00-4pm Songwriting Playshop– Learn to write a song! Indie folk pop duo “We Are the Northern Lights” will lead a 2-part song writing playshop. Participants will explore effective song craftsmanship. Then you’ll get the opportunity to co-write. Bring your favorite pad, pencil, and dictation machine…we’re gonna write a GREAT song!! The first hour, participants will work with Sheldon Low and Hadar Orshalimy examining existing lyrics to identify and highlight powerful lyric writing concepts, followed by exercises and time for group lyric co-writing. In hour two, participants will examine contemporary melodies to identify successful composition strategies, followed by group exercises to compose an original melody for the lyrics created in the first hour. Participants may choose to participate in one or both halves of the “Playshop.”
