First Fridays: Finding the Michigan Meteor

First Fridays: Finding the Michigan Meteor

Presented by Sloan*Longway at Longway Planetarium

Learn how some clever calculations and teamwork led a group of astronomers from Longway Planetarium and searchers from the Farmington Community Stargazers on a hunt to find the Michigan Meteor. This fireball, or bolide, burned up in the skies over Michigan on January 16 and was seen and captured in video over a six-state area. Longway astronomers used footage from their security cameras to triangulate a rough fall location, as well as data from the American Meteor Society and friends at NASA. The group hit the jackpot, discovering three pieces of the Michigan Meteor. Hear the story of the search and see actual pieces of the Michigan Meteor at this presentation.
