MUSTARD’S RETREAT TO PERFORM BENEFIT CONCERT FOR THE PEOPLE OF FLINT

The Flint Folk Music Society, in conjunction with the Flint Public Library and Mustard’s Retreat, are producing a benefit concert for, and a celebration of, the people of Flint.  It will be presented at the Flint Public Library (1026 E. Kearsley St.) on Friday, September 21, at 6:30 pm. Admission is free, but a voluntary donation of water or non-perishable food is requested.  No monetary donations will be accepted, but information will be available that night as to where you can contribute to support the people of Flint.

Mustard’s Retreat has been synonymous with folk music in the Flint area since the late 1970s, when they appeared frequently in the area. The group also had a popular radio show on WFBE, which was the public radio station for Flint at the time. Libby Glover, Flint born and raised, brought the trio (which consists of herself, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich) to Flint in 1976. They quickly became an institution, packing clubs and doing concerts at U of M, many festivals, summer concert series, and were the first performers to play at Riverbank Park.

Mustard’s Retreat has just released a new CD, their 14th, entitled “Make Your Own Luck.”  Included on it is a song Tamulevich adapted to address the Flint Water Crisis called “Take the Children and Run.” Well known singer/songwriter Christine Lavin created a video for it, which can be seen on You Tube at:

Released just over 2 years ago, the video has been viewed nearly 4,000 times. “For us, Flint is family,” said Tamulevich. “We wanted to do something that would keep the issue alive, to take this to audiences all over the country, and not let people forget what happened here, and how and why.  Flint, and the people here, has been so very good to us: doing this concert is a small way we can give back. It means a great deal to us, and we are so pleased to be working with the Flint Folk Music Society and the Flint Public Library, both of which have presented us many times over the years.  It is a community effort…for the community.”
