Artist Talk by Alison Saar at MW Gallery

Artist Talk by Alison Saar at MW Gallery

Presented by MW Gallery at MW Gallery

Join us for an artist talk by Alison Saar on Saturday, November 23 at 2:00 PM at MW Gallery in downtown Flint, Michigan. Ms. Saar will discuss her background, artistic process, philosophies, and art in the intimate setting of MW Gallery. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

This program is in conjunction with “Off the Wall: Sculpture from the Mott-Warsh Collection” on view through January 25, 2020. Alison Saar is an artist with work represented in the Mott-Warsh Collection, a private collection of fine art created by artists of the African diaspora.

Alison Saar creates artworks that frequently transform found objects to reflect themes of cultural and social identity, history, and religion. She credits her mother, acclaimed collagist and assemblage artist Betye Saar, with exposing her to metaphysical and spiritual traditions. Assisting her father, Richard Saar, a painter and art conservator, in his restoration shop inspired her learning and curiosity about other cultures. Her sculptures, installations, and prints incorporate found objects including rough-hewn wood, old tin ceiling panels, nails, shards of pottery, glass, and urban detritus. The resulting figures and objects become powerful totems exploring issues of gender, race, heritage, and history.

Work by Alison Saar can be found in the permanent collections of museums located all around the world including: the Baltimore Art Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institute, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art, as well as the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. She has also had many notable public commissions including the Harriet Tubman Memorial, New York City N.Y. in 2006, the Califia in the Capitol Area East End Complex, Sacramento, CA in 2004, and the Metro Transit Authority, Metro North 125th Station, New York, NY, in 1991.
