AUDITIONS!

LOVE, LIES, AND THE DOCTOR’S DILEMMA!!

A farce!

By Michael and Susan Parker

Directed by Zachery Wood

PLOT:

Joan Scheller lives with the great love of her life, Sandy. In a panicked effort to hide their relationship from her sister-in-law (the former movie star Olivia St. Claire and sister of her late husband), Joan introduces Sandy as her psychiatrist. One little white lie leads to another and before long everyone is tangled up in the string of love and lies! Vinny the Enforcer, a quintessential Italian mobster, is masquerading as Joan’s security guard. While Joan’s son Chris is forced to disguise himself as Joan’s made-up daughter “Christina” to evade the Italian mob! Joan’s new neighbor Rachel, whose life appears to be a series of catastrophes one after the other, further creates chaos and confusion. All the while everyone comes to “The Doctor” for a session. Sandy is forced to give misguided advice which, to everyone’s surprise, seems to work. Ordinary circumstances, trials of love, and little white lies create a massive dilemma in “Love, Lies, and the Doctor’s Dilemma!”

PERFORMANCE DATES: March 12-15 & March 20-22

ROLES:

3M/3F

JOAN SCHELLER: (F/40+) A middle-aged widow (casting someone at least over the age of 30). She lives with her former-gardener-current-lover Sandy. She is unconventional and free-spirited. She doesn’t seem to care what others think of her, with the exception of her overbearing judgmental sister-in-law Olivia, who seems to dominate her in some strange way. Her relationship with Sandy is a secret from her son Chris and her sister-in-law Olivia. She is quick-witted, quick-thinking, and resourceful. Her seemingly innocent white lies create chaos and confusion throughout the play.

SANDY: (M/40+) An easy-going, mild-mannered guy who is in a secret relationship with Joan. He was once her gardener and began working for her after her first husband died. At the beginning of the play, to hide almost being caught kissing Joan on the couch when Olivia arrives unexpectedly, Joan introduces Sandy as her psychiatrist Dr. Gardener. Joan leaves him with no choice but to go along with the deception. Little does he know that his services will be in great demand as a psychiatrist for the rest of the play!

VINNY “THE ENFORCER”: (M/20+)The quintessential Italian mobster; he dresses like one, talks like one and carries a concealed Magnum .45 named “Big Bertha” that he does not hesitate to show to everyone. He is looking for Joan’s son, Chris, who has accumulated considerable gambling debts and is now on the run from the mob. Although he appears to be tough, Vinny is actually sensitive, sweet, and looking for love in his life. He talks with a rough “New Jersey” accent. Nobody knows if he is actually Italian or not, but he seems to believe he is.

OLIVIA ST. CLAIRE: (F/40+) Joan’s sister-in-law. A wealthy, aging movie star, she never simply enters a room but always “makes an entrance.” A well-meaning but overbearing woman, she asserts her authority upon everyone, especially Joan, who she lovingly sees as weak and incapable of taking care of herself since her husband’s death. Headstrong, confident, and never afraid to speak her mind, she also appears to be quite taken with the rough and street-smart Vinny.

RACHAEL: (F/20+) Joan’s new neighbor. She seems to live in her own little world, constantly being nosey and taking liberties. She continually refers to disastrous incidents in her life with unusual optimism. With her flighty demeanor and malapropisms, you are left to wonder how she ever survives in life with her misfortunes and bad luck. She is, however, a sweet, thoughtful, and kind woman who always tries to bring joy to other’s lives. Even if she is a bit naïve, she is able to bounce back from disaster easily.

CHRIS SCHELLER: (M/20+) Joan’s son who is on the run from the mob. He is seemingly out of work and living a carefree life. He does not seem to take his life-threatening situation very seriously. Joan, however, takes it extremely seriously and, fearful for his safety, persuades him to convincingly masquerade as her made-up daughter “Christine.” Optimistic, charismatic, and flirtatious towards Rachael, he always knows how to look on the bright side of a terrible situation.
