December Exhibitions

Presented by Buckham Gallery at Buckham Gallery

December 10, 2021 – January 8, 2021

Horizons | Emily Legleitner

Indexing Schizophrenia | Diane Zeeuw

Seeking Solace | Rebecca Zeiss

Buckham Gallery is pleased to announce three concurrent solo exhibitions featuring Emily Legleitner, Diane Zeeuw and Rebecca Zeiss. A primary function of art is that of a lens through which interiors are made discernible to viewers. The emotional intricacies of the human experience can be laid bare through visual representation, often finding a higher state of relatability, of sympathetic resonance between artist and audience. The three artists of this exhibit, Emily Legleitner, Diane Zeeuw, and Rebecca Zeiss, all offer expansive views of concepts and reflections of a far less direct nature, each plunging deep into their respective focuses.

Legleitner, an MFA candidate in printmaking at the University of Alberta, creates printed work informed by lens-based inquiry, performance, and the body, using portraiture to share auto-biographical narratives and self-reflections in her exhibition Horizons.

Zeeuw, Chair of the MA in Visual and Critical Studies and MFA in Studio at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD), explores collected imagery, information, and objects related to mental illness and its history, as well as her firsthand accounts of the experience of schizophrenia. Indexing Schizophrenia presents and challenges questions surrounding the reinforcement of otherworldly opinions of mental illness and the struggle to avoid exhausted cultural tropes in dealing with the topic.

Zeiss received her MFA in Photography at Central Michigan University and currently teaches Photography and Printmaking at the University of Michigan-Flint. Seeking Solace is influenced by life experiences of shared vulnerability referencing memory, dreams, and the collective unconscious.

Horizons, Indexing Schizophrenia and Seeking Solace open on Friday, December 10 and run through Saturday, January 8, 2022.
